4th of July Cruise to Oyster Bay and Bayville was great fun with 7 boats fully equipped with over 14 toys in tow. Many Sunfish and dinghy races were run with everyone winning in the fun department.
The fireworks were another true delight!
Congratulations to Ed Dole and Rogue on placing 1st in our Stratford Shoal Race this year just nosing out Mike Olsen and Salient by 3 seconds in corrected time and almost 5 minutes ahead of the First Boat Home and third place finisher Don Rave and Resolute. It was a tough race with light winds and fighting tides, many boats did not finish in the time limit. Once again this race benefited Make*A*Wish of Suffolk County. Together with the Children’s Regatta that is run at Northport Yacht Club, and the swim-a-thon at both CYC and NYC, we raised almost $25,000. Several of our junior members did well in the Make*A*Wish Regatta, Chris Heidelberger 1st in Lasers, Peter Sterflinger 2nd in Opti green, Kai Benson 3rd in Blue Jay Novice, Pam Rebholz 7th in Blue Jays, and TJ Bolen 8th in Opti blue. Congratulations to all and thank you for your efforts and contributions!
The
Around Long Island Race was last weekend and I’d like to congratulate Mike &
Bernadette Olsen on Salient on being 2nd in class and 14th
overall! They completed the race in under 27 hours. Other area participants
included Jalacor, 1st in class 5th overall – Vitamin Sea,
2nd in class – and Diane, 6th in class.
Jeff Hammer and Dreadlocks took 1st in division at Larchmont Race Week with local sailor Loki finishing 2nd.
August 9th - Wednesday Night racing starts up again with the Summer Sunset Series. If you are interested in entering this 5 week series, contact our Fleet Captain, Joe Scarpulla. Come on down to Nicky’s after race party each and meet the captains and crew. Everyone is welcome!
Sept 16 – LHYC Katrina Cup and CYC Winkle Cup Races
Sept 24 & Oct 8 – LHYC Fall Target Rock Regatta
Check the website for Race Notices and Entry forms – or contact Joe Scarpulla at 631-673-8078.
Miscellany….
The Town of Huntington has added two new lit buoys to the region. One is at the entrance to Northport Harbor and one is at the entrance to Centerport Harbor. Check them out and mark your charts.
LHYC will have a cruise to the BVI Jan 27th-Feb 3rd 2007. Please e-mail if you are interesting in joining us. Sincerely, Roger Dorr RKDorr@hotmail.com
Transom stickers are in!
Use them on your boat and/or car – show your yacht club pride! Additional stickers are available at a cost of $5 each. If you would like one, please contact the Commodore.
FYI – there is a box down at the Willis Marine Center sales office for LHYC that contains sailing videos and other information to share with the membership. Charlie Powers has donated copies of the latest Volvo Race. Feel free to borrow and return in a timely fashion for others to enjoy!
Business….
If you are not receiving emails from us or would like to change your email please alert me at commodore@LHYC.org. Although we attempt to get all news out in Telltales there are occasional needs for short notice bulletins.
Have news, a story, or a photo you would like included next month please send it on. – As this is our 40th Anniversary as well, if you come across old stories or photos I have the technology to get those published as well.

Proud to be at the helm,
Leigh Sterflinger

Where did that come from? Ever wonder where certain terms came from?
There are terms with nautical origins that are used every day.
Bent on a Splice (amorous union)…a sailor who is bent on a splice is one who is about to be united to his lady-love within or without the bonds of matrimony. Congratulations to Chris & Jill Dara and to Jordan Mindich & Shannon Fowler on their Wedding unions this month!
Here’s one down the hatch for ya! Never give up the ship!
